When it came to decide what I career path to focus on in my
third year, I still choose directing, the same decision I came into university
wanting to be, and thanks to the previous two years of experimenting and trying
other skills it made me more confident in approaching this path. Becoming a
director allows me to take an idea and bring the vision I have for a story into
a visual screen. My future aspiration is that after I am able to gain
experience in the industry as well as develop my education to higher degree, I
would like to start my own production company abroad. Learning to be a director
also allows me to know what each role of a production consists of, and most
importantly how they come together at the end to compliment each other. The
role not only requires leadership skills, but also to be able to inspire crew
members to fulfil the final vision.
To show case my ability in directing through my show reel by
the end of the year, I would need to show that I am able to make a diverse portfolio
of work, and that I’m not limited to one style of filmmaking, this is why I
gave myself the aim to create this year a short film accompanied by
documentary, I will also keep working on all types of projects to expand not
only my knowledge on the arts, but also to expand my outlook of my capabilities
as a creative person.
During the summer, Tamara was telling about a story her
friend told her when she was younger, the story talked about how her friend (a
frequent flyer) thought that when she was traveling by plane as a kid, she
always imagined that while she was in that plane the whole world was changing
around her while she’s not noticing e.g. people would change the world like a
set (Truman show like inspiration). It seemed that this idea that she had when
she was a child is far from ridiculous, this theme of people thinking they’re
living in some sort of movie is not abnormal as myself and others I have
mentioned this idea to seem to agree.
| The Truman Show, 1998 |
The idea seemed very interesting to me as it had an underlying
connotation to in it. The child sees the world as something that seems routine
or rehearsed, which why it leads to this assumption that everything is fake.
After talking about the idea more with Tamara we thought it would be a great
idea to create into a short film targeting both adults and children at once.
